To infitity and bookkeeping!

My journey to being a licensed IAB Bookkeeper

I had worked in admin type roles all my life and always seemed to be ‘roped’ into the petty cash or other bookkeeping type tasks..was the universe trying to tell me something?

Bored in my office job and needing a new challenge I thought about training as a bookkeeper through AAT. I had tried to learn double-entry bookkeeping when my children were little, in a time before the internet - yes it did exist!  I got nowhere with written text, very little interaction with a tutor who said I just ‘had the learn it!!’ so I gave up!

Fast forward more years than I will admit on here, friends and colleagues who believed in me and a ‘what can I lose’ attitude - I took the plunge.

I sat my first exam in July 2015 and passed first time!  I couldn’t believe it. Had to keep going now!

Eighteen months later with a resilience and determination I didn’t know I possessed, I had passed all my exams and gained my Accounting Diploma and the letters after my name (as someone who didn’t go to University it meant so much to me)

Fast forward to April 2017 and I opened the doors of Purple Bookkeeping - boy was I in for a ride

I had to learn how to make a website, create a brand, network with people I didn't already know, endless learning about HMRC and how sole traders and limited companies work in the real world - a bit like passing your driving test 1and going on the motorway for the first time!

I then had to conquer Quick Books and Xero (whicih I love by the way) so that I could provide the very best services to my clients - not much good as a Bookkeeper if you can't use the software!

I also offer training in it to my clients too.

Here I am two and a bit years on and working with an amazing variety of business owners who have taught me so much about their businesses and lives.  I in turn, support them through the ups and downs of compliance and good record keeping, rejoice when they grow and understand when they go back to employment.

Life is certainly interesting and I am never bored anymore!

What was your journey?
Did you always know what you wanted to do or did you come about it by accident?
How far along are you?
Can I help you with anything to on your way?
